BROOKLYN, Ohio – On a chilly day this fall, two brothers decided to forego an afternoon with friends and instead spent their day giving back to the first responders who spend each day serving their city.
But it was far from the first time the brothers, Gideon Trank, 7, and Josiah Trank, 5, were compelled to do such an altruistic gesture.
“They’ve always had a love and respect for those in uniform,” said Machelle Trank, their mother. “They’re the kinds of kids you see running up to random people in uniform, whether it’s a military member or first responder, and saying hello or shaking their hand.”
In the summer of 2018 Josiah and Gideon learned about a sick Cleveland Police K9 and held a lemonade stand to raise money for treatments. And later that summer, along with a cousin, they held another fundraiser for fallen Cleveland Police officer Vu Nguyen.
So this fall when they heard Cleveland police officer David Muniz was battling cancer, they organized the hot chocolate stand, which raised about $300 for his medical expenses.
“They heard me talking to my husband about a police officer with cancer,” said Machelle Trank. “Right away, they asked how they could help.”
At the Nov. 4 stand, they sold hot chocolate and an assortment of pastries. Hot chocolate was $1 but free for police officers, firefighters and soldiers. Hugs were free to anyone who visited.
To show his gratitude, Muniz surprised the youngsters at their stand not once, but twice. The first time they were a bit nervous, but on his second visit it was all smiles and hugs.
“I was speechless,” said Muniz. “It was one of the best feelings to see what they did. Sometimes you just have to take a deep breath and take it all in."

The fundraising stand is not yet done serving its purpose, and the brothers are eagerly awaiting spring when they can hold another lemonade stand to raise more money for a worthy cause.
There are no particular fundraisers in the works yet but when something is scheduled it will be posted on Machelle’s Facebook page to spread the word.
In the meantime, the Trank family is honoring officers with a holiday tree in their front yard lit up in blue with a star on top that looks like a police siren when it flashes. Along with the lights are the names of every officer serving their area.
When it’s all said and done, it’s all about respect for the people who keep them safe.
“They help people and make a difference,” said Gideon Trank.
“They’re superheroes,” added Josiah Trank.
