San Angelo chocolate shop earns Award of Distinction for hard work, dedication to sweet treats - Standard-Times

SAN ANGELO — Cowboy-Up Chocolate shop has earned accolades  from largest chocolate distributor in U.S. for making a mark on the industry.

Peter’s Chocolate, Cargill’s premium chocolate brand, has a new award program that  recognizes chocolatiers who are making their mark on the confectionery and chocolate industry, according to a news release.

Twelve companies were selected to be the first recipients of the Peter’s Chocolate Award of Distinction.

"Cargill created the award to call out ground-breaking artisans who are elevating the art of candy making with their innovative use of chocolate," according to the release.

Cowboy-Up Chocolates was selected as a recipient, which placed owner James Crowder and his business in the Peter's Chocolate 2020 calendar.

"A personal passion for the culinary and candy making arts led James Crowder to turn pro in 2008 after careers in fashion retail and real estate," the release stated. "A proud son of Texas, he embraced his western heritage, creating original recipes that incorporated such Tex-Mex staples as jalapenos, chilies, mesquite bean flour and dried chili peppers."

Everything in the shop is Western/Texas based, including Texas-shaped truffles, which makes the business stand out.

"This is honestly pretty neat," Crowder said. "Considering Cargill is the biggest chocolate distributor in the U.S., it's an honor."

Crowder's famous Almonds De Leche recipe is featured in the calendar. His recipe won first place in New York City out of 200 chocolatiers four years ago.

Other winners included:

  • Bakers Candies, Inc.: Greenwood, Nebraska
  • Malley’s Chocolates: Cleveland, Ohio
