Flint Fit Fest, Women, Wine & Chocolate and other Genesee County events this week - mlive.com

GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- Here’s what’s going on in Flint and Genesee County this week, Jan. 20-26.

Women, Wine & Chocolate

The 15th annual Wine, Women & Chocolate event is giving women a reason to get out and enjoy the winter weather together on Jan 25.

Beginning at 1 p.m., the event provides a full afternoon of activity at IMA Brookwood Golf Club in Burton, beginning with a walk or snowshoeing on the club’s 5K trail. If there’s enough snow, women are invited to bring their own cross-country skis.

Hospitality tents will be set up on the golf course offering snacks and treats from Churchill’s Food & Spirits, The Red Baron, VG’s Grocery, Starbucks, Tasty Layers, Tiki Pineapple and the golf club.

After the outdoor activities, the women can enjoy salon services indoors from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. Summerset Salon and Day Spa is offering a variety of complimentary services, including hair refreshers and paraffin treatments for hands. The Flint School of Therapeutic Massage is providing chair massages.

After pampering, the Fenton Winery & Brewery is providing a wine tasting, accompanied by a pasta dinner prepared by the golf club’s chef Maria LaBrecque. During the wine tasting and dinner from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m., there will be raffles, a silent auction, music and lots of chocolate.

The event is limited to the first 300 women who register. It costs $50 per person, and day-of registration costs $60. Only women 21 years of age and older may attend the event. To register online, go to winewomenandchocolate.org.

Flint Roller Derby League tryouts

The Flint Roller Derby League is gearing up for its second season competing in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, and they’re looking for women to become a part of their high-speed, high-intensity team.

There will be a free off-skate tryout session from 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Jan. 26 at 810 Crossfit in Grand Blanc. Attendees are asked to arrive no later than 2:45 p.m., bring lots of water, and to wear tennis shoes and athletic clothes.

No experience is required. The team is looking for individuals who have a positive attitude, work well in a team environment and can work through mental and physical pain.

Flint Fit Fest

Harambee Wellness is hosting a day dedicated to fitness and health with the first Flint Fit Fest on Jan. 25 at the Flint Farmer’s Market.

The Flint Fit Fest will kick off at 9 a.m. with different fitness demonstrations until 1 p.m., including Zumba, extreme hip-hop, yoga, belly dancing and hustle aerobics. There will also be a Zumbini demonstration, which is an exercise class for babies, toddlers and their caregiver.

“I wanted a way for people to test-drive exercise,” said Marquita Adams, found of Harambee Wellness. “You’re more inclined to stick with a form of exercise when you’re exposed to different types, and you’re more willing to try it out if you see it in action.”

Attendees will also have the chance to watch one of two cooking demonstrations in the Farmer’s Market demonstration kitchen. One demonstrator will teach people how to cook a healthy stir-fry meal, while the other will focus on healthy meal prepping.

Local independent fitness instructors and local gyms will also be there to connect with people and tell them more about the fitness opportunities in their community, Adams said. Crim Fitness Foundation, Complete Runner and The Gym For Her are just a few of the vendors that will be there.

All aspects of the event are free, family friendly and all levels of fitness abilities are welcome. To learn more, check out the event’s Facebook page.
