Chocolate Chess Pie - Greenville News

YUM, is all we need to be concerned with here. This chocolate chess pie, a favorite holiday dessert, is pudding-like on the inside, crispy and crackly on the top, and has just SEVEN ingredients including the pie shell.

This pie can be in the oven in 15 minutes and uses no mixer, just a quick whisk of the ingredients. I use a prepared pie crust from Swamp Rabbit Café and Grocery, always, but feel free to use your favorite store-bought or homemade version.

The key to the simplicity of this pie is having the pie crust on hand (you’ll never be mad about having some ready in the freezer) for an actual “I’m in the mood for pie” moment to be feasible.

This pie is delicious hot from the oven but is equally yummy at room temperature. I often make these a few days in advance to save stress on the day of a big meal and they are one of the first things gobbled up. Add this recipe to your all-the-time holiday recipe list!

Chocolate Chess Pie

Total Time: 1 hour

Yield: Serves 6-8

·       1 unbaked pie shell

·       1 ½ cups sugar

·       5 heaping tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

·       1 can (5 ounces) evaporated milk

·       4 tablespoons salted butter, melted

·       2 eggs

·       1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1.     Preheat the oven to 350F.

2.     In a large bowl, whisk the sugar, cocoa powder, evaporated milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla together until smooth. Pour into the prepared pie crust.

3.     Bake for 45 minutes or until the edges are set and the center of the pie is slightly jiggly. Place the pie plate on a rack to cool slightly before serving.

4.     This is delicious hot, cold, or at room temperature. Enjoy!
