5 Spots for Hot Chocolate in Rhode Island - Rhode Island Monthly

Photo from Empire Tea and Coffee Facebook Page.

It’s the time of the year where we crave a warm hot chocolate topped with marshmallows and a peppermint stick to stir, to warm up after shoveling snow or by the fire. Before you open that packet of cocoa powder, here are five spots that are better than store-bought.

  • Empire Tea and Coffee

This East Bay local coffee shop chain offers both hot and cold (frozen!) chocolate variations. The shop’s regular hot chocolate is offered in three sizes. The frozen hot chocolate is served with chocolate, milk and ice blended together. Add a caffeine kick and get the frostbite: chocolate, cold brew and ice.

The minimalist-style tearoom and creperie specializes in tea, but they also have a unique selection of hot cocoa. The mexican hot chocolate is rich, full and indulgent with a touch of heat. The super cacao and golden cacao offer healing properties similar to an herbal tea, such as energy, mental clarity, stress relief and anti-inflammatory.

  • Benefit Juice Bar and Cafe

This hidden gem offers three varieties of hot chocolate: Belgian dark cocoa, Mexican spiced cocoa and chocoholic’s cocoa. They’re made without artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners and hydrogenated oil. Even though they’re best enjoyed hot, they can also be served cold or blended. Edit: the cafe is closed for the holiday season until January 3.

  • Cafe Choklad

It seems that spicy hot cocoa is the specialty drink in most cafes, but the wicked hot chocolate served here provides a healthy kick of cayenne to cut the sweetness. The hot chocolate without the heat is creamy with just the right amount of bitterness.

  • The Shop at Fox Point

This eco-conscious coffee shop is offering hot chocolate as its seasonal beverage. It is topped with homemade marshmallows. In the coming months, the shop will host its annual Hot Cocoa Fest where they curate new and exciting flavors each week. Check their website for more details about the fest in the new year.

The Details: The Shop at Fox Point, 460 Wickenden St., Providence, 401-684-1140, theshopfoxpoint.com.
